The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The NYPD strives to foster a safe and fair city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations, and solve the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between the people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation.
The Information Security Office plays a crucial role in safeguarding the department's digital infrastructure. It ensures the security of sensitive data, protects against cyber threats, and maintains the integrity of the NYPD's technological systems. This office is part of the broader Information Technology Bureau, which supports the department's mission by providing advanced tools, data-driven strategies, and seamless communication systems to enhance public safety and transparency.

The CISO is responsible for preserving the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of NYPD information. They will oversee the cyber-security of the NYPD, protecting, monitoring, analyzing, detecting, and responding to network attacks, intrusions, disruptions, or other unauthorized actions that would compromise or cripple department information systems and networks. The CISO also acts as an advisor to the Deputy Commissioner of Information Technology, providing security audit and review, product evaluations and policy recommendations. They are the principle subject matter expert for the investigation of computer security incidents that affect NYPD members, and has review authority for data classification, employee background checks, procurement of relevant technologies, hiring of security staff, vendor access to NYPD data and secure development of applications and network architecture.
